Petition: Move the Train Yard from Thorncliffe Park

#SaveTPARK – save Thorncliffe Park from Environmental Racism, save the limited neighbourhood space and save TPARK from an unfair process that takes advantage of the people that actually live in the neighbourhood.

On April 8th, Thorncliffe Park community was surprised to learn of the Metrolinx plan to build a train yard known as the Maintenance and Storage Facility (MSF). The purpose of the yard is to service, repair and wash over 200 rail cars 24/7 for the Ontario Line. The proposed location of this train yard will take away neighbourhood space that this community does not have and take away the vibrancy of the community. It will have a devastating impact on the economic and social foundation of this already vulnerable community.

What our community will lose if this project proceeds:

  • ·a peaceful community space.

  • a grocery store that is a cultural icon for the South Asian community, and many other Torontonians.

  • a tranquil and quiet environment for prayers – locating a train yard next to a place of worship is not acceptable to any community.

  • a variety of culturally sensitive and appropriate services for the community, including services that cater to health, education and social well being.

  • established long standing businesses that are important to everyone within community.

  • numerous other small businesses that are essential to our community, employing close to 1,000 local people.

All of these community services and businesses WILL BE GONE if we do not speak up and stop Metrolinx plans to build a train yard.

Our Position:

The community needs better access to transit and supports the Ontario Line. However, we cannot accept Metrolinx placing a train yard in our community.

Metrolinx HAS OPTIONS to locate the train yard to a different location if they follow a fair process. Choosing the densely populated Thorncliffe Park displays ignorance and a lack of responsibility. It is evidence of Environmental Racism, Metrolinx’s biased and discriminatory action towards a predominantly immigrant population.

MOVE THE TRAIN YARD. Do not take advantage of us.

We are Thorncliffe Park.

Here’s how YOU can help out today:

Email the Minister of Transportation Caroline Mulroney (minister.mto@ontario.ca) and Minister of Infrastructure Kinga Surma (kinga.surmaco@pc.ola.org) and state the following:

Stop the secret deals designed to silence the businesses and the Mosque in communities like Thorncliffe Park.  Metrolinx needs to hit the reset button on the location of a train yard in Thorncliffe Park. The wilful discrimination against the Thorncliffe Park community is not acceptable and needs to be stopped.
