Let’s Take a Closer Look at Metrolinx Misleading Job Claims

The “MSF Site Selection” document was filled with claims about jobs and employment numbers that caused some sites to be ruled out. However, a simple review shows that Metrolinx used some misleading numbers when talking about jobs in Thorncliffe Park.

According to the CEO of Metrolinx, employment impact was one of the most important criteria when choosing the train yard site. Even MPP Wynne and MP Oliphant repeated this job claim and they all said that Thorncliffe Park has the lowest job impact.  Let’s check their math.

Do you know how they did their comparison? You do not need to be a mathematician for this one.  Metrolinx compared the jobs located in Thorncliffe Park to an area that was THREE TIMES THE SIZE.   How is comparing a 400,000 square meters area to 147,000 square meters an accurate analysis?  When SaveTPARK did some simple math and did an apples to apples comparison, Thorncliffe Park has close to TWO TIMES more jobs impacted than any other area considered.

If this criteria was so important, one would think that when comparing job numbers – some level of accuracy would be used. With all of their high paying engineers and technical experts, Metrolinx fails to do so. Even scarier was how did the government overlook this?  Did they get duped by Metrolinx?  It’s common sense that a larger area will have more jobs.

Once again, Metrolinx uses a tactic to cancel out other sites to falsely make Thorncliffe Park seem like the only option.  The immigrants and people of colour who rely on Thorncliffe Park businesses for employment don’t have the same importance.

Simply put, the willful deception on which area has the most jobs impacted is more evidence of the systemic bias against Thorncliffe Park.

Here’s how YOU can help out today:

Email the Minister of Transportation Caroline Mulroney (minister.mto@ontario.ca) and state the following:

Thorncliffe Park has close to two times more jobs impacted that any other area that Metrolinx looked at.   Why did your office think it was ok to compare Thorncliffe Park jobs to an area THREE TIMES THE SIZE?  Metrolinx needs to hit the reset button on the location of a train yard in Thorncliffe Park. The wilful discrimination against the Thorncliffe Park community is not acceptable and needs to be stopped.
